Aelle: King of the South Saxons in Sussex. King Uther fought against him at Mearcred Creek (485) and won an inconclusive victory. Aelle took advantage of Logres' distraction to conquer Magouns, and slaughtered all the defenders (491). Octa has made overtures to him, but Aelle has not formed an alliance (493). Recruited Saexwine to his cause (499). Aided King Cerdic against King Nanteleod at Netley Marsh (508).
Aescalax: King of Essex. Ordered a raid on Amesbury in an attempt to kidnap Queen Igraine. Was slain in his hunting lodge in retaliation (501).
Aescwine: Prince of Essex, and son of King Aescalax. Came to Salisbury to discuss tribute, but was rebuffed (496). Led a failed attack on Salisbury (497). Led a raid on Amesbury to to kidnap Queen Igraine. Murdered Gwiona, but was slain by Morgan (501).
Aethelswith: King of the Angles in Anglia. Landed in Caercolun and defeated Duke Lucius, claiming the dukedom for himself after the Battle of Colchester (485). Slew Duke Lucius at the Battle of Ipswitch (486) and then consolidated his control over the area, renaming it 'Anglia'. He has not joined Octa's alliance (493). Killed by Cwichelm (500).
Aguar: The rightful King of Thule, now an exile in the Fens.
Alain: A friendly knight of Escavalon and illegitimate son of King Nanteleod. Fought in the Salisbury Tournament (499). King of Escavalon after the death of his father (508).
Alberich: Squire of Sir Edwin. Killed by the Crone of Thornstead (507).
Asher: Handmaiden of Sir Esther. Prone to gossip. Abducted by Welsh hillsmen to be their king's bride, and ransomed back by Sir Esther (494). Now serving as Sir Cuthbert's squire (503). Took Sir Jeremy's body back to Amesbury (506). Found his son, Sir Mabon (507). Has become the new Abbess of Amesbury (509).

Bartholomew: Archbishop of Canterbury. Follower of the Pelagian heresy. Reached a compromise with Gwiona and her followers, making them a part of the mainstream British Christian church (495). Has sent missionaries out to convert Britain in preparation for the rapture (496). Rescued by Sir Julius from the attack on Saint Albans (503). Died of exposure in the wilderness (504).
Basile: Oldest of three brothers who rules Rydychan. Overthrew Countess Maegan (496). Raided Saint Albans (503). Hanged by King Nanteleod (504).
Bege: Youngest of three brothers who rules Rydychan. Overthrew Countess Maegan (495). Imprisoned and ransomed knights of Salisbury who were seeking alliance (496). Killed by Sir Julius when attacking Saint Albans (503).
Beleus: The middle of three brothers who rules Rydychan. Overthrew Countess Maegan (495). Raided Saint Albans (503). Hanged by King Nanteleod (504).
Berrant: Prince of Malahaut. Terrorises peasants with his group of faux-Roman crony-knights. Invaded northern Logres, in an alliance with the Saxons (494). Attempted to negotiate an alliance with the Picts (501). Took part in the invasion of Lindsey (503).
Blaines: The Steward of Leucomagus, son of Sir Rhisiart. He believes that his father was murdered by the men of Salisbury. Raided across the border, but was driven back by Sir Helbur and Sir Edwin (506).
Bourt: A starving peasant at Wallton, in the shadow of Hadrian's Wall. He helped to rescue the knights of Salisbury(501).
Branwen: The Maiden of a witch cult near Devizes; uncovered and burned at the stake (507).
Brastias: Knight, bodyguard of King Uther Pendragon. Sir Brastias is reputed to be the most deadly swordsman in all Britain. He led an army against King Aethelswith of the Angles (486). Fought at Lincoln (490). Wounded at the Battle of Saint Albans (495). Won the Salisbury Tournament, but was murdered by Saxons at his wedding to the Countess Ellen (499).
Bremius: A young knight of Salisbury with very little compassion. Made steward of Sir Neddig's estates (495). He had a peasant rebellion, which was resolved peacefully (497). Died during the fall of Salisbury (499).
Bretta: A carpenter's widow and refugee from north of Hadrian's Wall. She helped rescue the knights of Salisbury, and married Sir Julian (501).
Briar: Vintner and follower of Sir Fflergant, the Brigand King. Betrayed Sir Fflergant to the Senate of Dorset. Almost murdered him in the fighting, and escaped the ensuing violence (509).
Briona: Member of a pagan sorority in Thornstead. Accused of witchcraft by Elin; repented and became a Christian nun (507).
Bronwyn: An intelligent young woman at Illwind, and friends with Sir Arnulf. Helped Sir Cadfael court Lady Violette (489). Accompanied Violette on her quest to save Sir Cadfael from the Irish (493). Rules Illwind Castle as steward after the death of Lady Violette (497). Went missing (507).

Cador: Son of Duke Gorlois by his first wife. Led a token Cornish force at the Battle of Mearcred Creek, where he was insulted by Sir Cadfael (485). Fought at Lincoln (490). Reconciled with Sir Cadfael at King Uther’s Christmas feast. He survived the fall of Cornwall but became disillusioned with knighthood. Sir Cadfael helped him escape (491). Fought in the Battle of Saint Albans for Sir Cadfael's sake, where he slew the giant Eosa, then slipped away before the fatal feast (495). Took service with King Nanteleod in Wales (496). Visited Salisbury as part of the Salisbury Tournament (499). Helped defeat the Redcap (500). Took part in the campaign against King Idres in Somerset (506).
Cadwy: King of Somerset. Untrustworthy but not powerful enough to cause any meaningful trouble. Sent raiders across the border into Salisbury when the army was on the continent with Praetor Syagrius (488). King Uther used this matter as leverage to win his vote on the Collegium (489). Has lost half of Somerset to the Cornish (504). Loses Bath and Bristol (505). Swore fealty to King Nanteleod to win his aid in reclaiming Salisbury (506). Has reclaimed Somerset (507).
Cahal: The Morholt (King's Champion) of Ireland. Sent by King Lugaid to collect slaves from Cornwall, he attacked Glastonbury and captured Evienne, a Lady of the Lake. He traded Evienne for Sir Cadfael after the knight defeated him in a duel (492). Let a raid against the Ui Maol, but was defeated (493).
Carys: Gossipy member of a pagan sorority in Thornstead. Killed by the Crone of Thornstead (507).
Centurion King: The King of Malahaut and member of the Supreme Collegium. Has agreed to vote for Uther Pendragon as High King (487). Has lost his confidence in King Uther after the Pendragon abandoned the meeting of the Supreme Collegium to chase Igraine, the wife of Duke Gorlois (491). Agreed to an alliance with King Octa against Logres (493). Invaded northern Logres as part of his alliance with the Saxons (494).
Cerdic: Half-Saxon son of Vortigern and King of Wessex. Conquered Hampshire, renaming it Wessex (495). Attempted to gain an alliance with Salisbury, but was rebuffed (496). Conquered the Isle of Wight (497). Salisbury agreed to serve him (498). Conquered Salisbury (499). Lost Portchester to King Port (502). Withdrew rather than fight King Nanteleod (505). Made peace overtures  to Salisbury, which were rejected (506). Made an alliance with King Port (507). Defeated King Nanteleod at the Battle of Netley Marsh (508). Conquered Dorset (509).
Corneus: Duke of Lindsey. Attacked by Malahaut, he was unable to go to the Battle of Saint Albans (495). Swore fealty to King Nanteleod after being saved from another invasion by Malahaut (503). Joined King Nanteleod at the Battle of Hertford (505). Died of old age (508).
Corval: Senator of Dorset. Led a force to wipe out the Brigand King. Swapped sides to support the Saxons after the conquest of Dorset (509).
Crone of Thornstead: The witch-crone of the cult around Devizes. Slain by Svenhilde (507).
Cwichelm: King of Anglia. Killed King Aethelswith and usurped the kingdom (500). Invaded and conquered Huntingdon and Hertford (501). Died at the Battle of Hertford against King Nanteleod (505).
Cynric: Prince of Wessex and son of Cerdic. Following his defeat at the Salisbury Tournament, he was incited by the Redcap into conquering Salisbury (499). Fled Sarum when it was attacked by a dragon (502). Has been secretly training a regiment of Saxon knights. His knights killed King Nanteleod at the Battle of Netley Marsh (508).

Deidre: The child of Sir Helbur and Sir Esther, conceived in the Forest Sauvage (496). Sprouted butterfly wings and flew away (497). Married the Rabbit King (502).
Dewi: Called ‘The Waterman’ for his temperance, a Christian saint in Carlion. Helped convict Merlin of high treason (492). Refused to assist Gwionaism (494).
Dirac: Prince of Estregales, son of King Canan and older brother of Prince Lac. He likes nuns rather too much. Was framed for attempting to murder his father by Sir Orcas, unsuccessfully (494). Fled his kingdom after it was invaded by the Irish (495). Has been reinstated as king by Nanteleod, to whom he has sworn fealty (498).
Diwrnach: 'King' of a tribe of cannibals on the island of Mona.

Ector: A poor but honest knight of Cambria. He fought in the tournament at King Uther’s Christmas feast in London but was defeated by Sir Cadfael (491).
Edward: Former squire of Sir Percival. Appointed Steward of Devizes after the reclamation of Salisbury, and led a persecution of the witch-cult there. Driven nearly insane with paranoia, before being killed by Elin (507).
Edwina: Dowager Baroness of Devon. Looking for a toyboy after the death of her husband in the Battle of Lincoln, she married Sir Gherard after King Uther’s Christmas feast (491). Died of old age (494).
Eilmer: A monk of Malmsebury, interested in all sorts of sciences. He attempted to fly, but forgot to put a tail on his hinder parts and crashed into a tree (494). Visited Amesbury (495). Deduced the origins of the faerie storm (496).
Elad: Marshal of Salisbury, lord of Vagon Castle. Trains young knights. Leader of half the forces of Salisbury at the Battle of Mearcred Creek – his unit held the line against the Saxons for long enough for King Uther to win the day (485). Was duped into accusing Sir Arnulf of banditry (493). Defeated the Saxon berserkers at the Battle of Saint Albans (495). Trained a new generation of young knights to bolster Salisbury's defences (496). Defended Salisbury from a Saxon incursion (497). Murdered by Saxons during the fall of Salisbury (499). His ghost haunted Vagon Castle until it was dispelled by Sir Helbur, his successor (505).
Elaine (3): Daughter of Gorlois. After her father's death she was married to King Nentres of Garloth (492)
Elaine (4): Noblewoman engaged to a Saxon; she fled to follow Sir Fflergant, the Brigand King. Living with Sir Trentis. Died when the bandits were destroyed (509).
Elin: Daughter of Wyan, and member of a pagan sorority in Thornstead. Accused her friend Rhiann of witch-craft. When Rhiann was found innocent, Elin snapped and used occult power to kill Sir Thomas, before being slain by Sir Edwin and Svenhilde (507).
Ellen: Countess of Salisbury. Wife of Earl Roderick, mother of Jenna and Robert. Sir Rhisiart, the Steward of Leucomagus, was also a suitor for her hand; he has an unrequited love for her, which led to the enmity between Sarum and Leucomagus. Originally from Rydychan. With the death of her husband, she is in charge of Salisbury (495). Has largely turned control of Salisbury over to her knights (496). She would like a zoo (497). She has an Allegorical Zoo (498). Betrothed to Sir Brastias after the Salisbury Tournament, she was murdered by Saxons at her wedding (499).
Evienne: One of the Ladies of the Lake, a pagan sisterhood blessed with minor magical talents: she is a clairvoyant. Taken as a slave by the Irish, but rescued by Sir Cadfael (492). Helped rescue Sir Cadfael from Ireland (493). Helped find the Hamper of Gwyddno Garanhir - she plotted treachery but was almost slain by Saxons (504).

Ffanci: Senator of Dorset. Vapid and self-serving, but a natural survivor. Collaborated with the Saxons, and was able to keep his power following the invasion of Dorset (509).
Fflergant: The Brigand King and husband of Elspeth. His brigands were destroyed and he went to live in Salisbury (509).

Gaius: Senator of Dorset. Keeper of the Roman camels. Killed in the Saxon invasion (509).
Galvius: A knight of Malahaut sent as emissary to Duke Corneus. In love with Svenhilde. Slain through treachery in a duel by Sir Bleddyn (503).
Ganeida: By repute, the twin sister of Merlin and leader of the Ladies of the Lake. Merlin has denied having a twin sister (491). Sir Arnulf has discovered her grave - she was stillborn (494). Sir Brietta learned that she is somehow the Lady of the Lake, and leads the sisterhood from the Other Side (498). The full details of the pact were revealed by the King of Sauvage (499).
Gareth: Senator of Dorset and follower of Sir Romulus' coup. Helped murder Praetor Jonathel, but was slain in the Saxon invasion of Dorset (509).
Garmon:  Lord of Brun, the Castle of Ease.
Gorbaduc: A fiendish knight who intended to breed an army of fiends. Slain by Lady Violette (497).
Gotegrim:  Son of King Leodegrance of Cameliard; the youngest child.
Green Banneret of Glevum: Son of the Duke of Gloucester, and constantly feuding with his twin the Red Banneret of Glevum. More cunning than his brother. Tried to get the knights of Salisbury involved in the feud between Gloucester and Clarence (494). Killed by men of Clarence (503).
Guinevach: Daughter of King Leodegrance of Cameliard; the younger twin of Guinevere.
Guinevere: Daughter of King Leodegrance of Cameliard; the oldest child and twin of Guinevach.
Gwendolyn: Blind shepherdess from Bedegraine. Illegitimate daughter of King Pellinore. Married Sir Cuthbert (503). Nearly starved after his death (506). Is being looked after by Sir Donna (507).
Gwiona: Saint and abbess of Amesbury. She was engaged four times but each time her fiancee perished. Officially 'not cursed'. She was briefly the object of Sir Cadfael's attention, but after his dishonourable conduct at Mearcred Creek she withdrew to a monastery (486). After Sir Cadfael failed to implore her to leave, she has worked hard and is now regarded as a living saint at Amesbury, the monastery where she is Abbess (487). Discovered the fake priests who were taking Saxon gold to Duke Gorlois (488). The village of Malksham, which pays rent to her, was the site of violence between Wotanists and Christians (489). Following its destruction at the hands of Sir Albrecht, she has petitioned Earl Roderick for justice (490). Had Sir Albrecht swear to rebuild Malksham, and to defend women and the church, before sending Sir Esther to be her agent in politics (491). Personally intervened to stop the reprisal attacks against Sir Albrecht's family after the death of the Archbishop Iestyn (492). Duped into accusing Sir Arnulf of banditry (493). Secondary Gwionaite abbeys/orphanages have been established in Cameliard and Estregales (494). Reached a compromise with Archbishop Bartholomew and has been accepted into the mainstream church (495). Intimidated the Saxons into not attacking Amesbury when Salisbury fell (499). Murdered during Prince Aescwine's raid on Amesbury (501). Gwyddno Garanhir: Legendary traveler and adventurer, most recently living in Cardigan. At one time, King of Cantrev Gwaelod. Rescued the Hamper of Gwyddno Garanhir from Irish raiders on Mona. Helped retrieve the Hamper from Cantrev Gwaelod (504). Disappeared into the Forest Sauvage (509).
Gwynfor: King of Ystrad Twi, a small Welsh hill-tribe. Acquired a warhorse of Logres in exchange for Asher, whom he had kidnapped (494).

Haydrich Cursebinder: A Saxon occultist from Kent. Tried to claim the Hamper of Gwyddno Garanhir, but was slain by its power (504).
Herga: The Saxon emissary to conquered Salisbury. Ordered the knights to conquer Dorset (509).
Heward the Pale: A club-footed knight living near London. Artistic and charitable, he has been taking in refugees from the war. Has begun to reconcile with the Church (501). Rescued Sir Julius and Archbishop Bartholomew, who later died (504).
Horrit: A witch who lives in the Fens. 'Trained' Svenhilde in magic.
Hubert: A short, round, pink-faced knight. Hates Wotanism. Repeatedly challenged Sir Albrecht during King Uther’s Christmas feast; was defeated by him (491).

Idres: King of Cornwall. Conquered the duchy of Cornwall (497). Conquered Devon (498). Conquered Jagent (499). Repulsed by Dorset (500). Arranged for the deaths of many lords in the lands he had conquered, including the Earl of Devon (502). Sent assassins after Sir Edwin (503). Invaded Somerset and conquered Wells (504). Conquers Bath and Bristol (505). Has gone to war with King Nanteleod (506). King Nanteleod has driven him out of Somerset (507). Sent troops to help fight against King Nanteleod at Netley Marsh (508).
Ifan: Man-at-arms at Devizes and lover of Briona. Killed by the Crone of Thornstead (507).
Igraine: Duchess of Cornwall. Married to Duke Gorlois (485). King Uther fell in love with her at London. Raped by Uther in the form of Duke Gorlois. Married Uther to become Queen of Logres a month later. Pregnant (491). After the abduction of her baby by Merlin, she has used witchcraft to curse him (492). Retired to Amesbury with her daughter Morgan following the death of King Uther Pendragon (495). Saxon raiders from Essex attempted to rescue her, but she was rescued by her daughter Morgan's magic (501).

Jaradan: Knight of Salisbury. An ambitious man obsessed with swords. He married Lady Indeg (485) for her considerable estates. Killed a berserker in single combat at Lincoln (490). Fought at the Battle of Saint Albans (495). Helped reclaim Salisbury from the Saxons (505). Made Lord of Tilshead (506).
Jenna: Daughter of Earl Roderick and Countess Ellen of Salisbury. Elder sister of Robert. Was nearly betrothed to Sir Rhisiart (486). Earl Roderick married her to Sir Arnulf, mostly to spite Sir Rhisiart (492). Gave birth to twin boys, Madoc and Ambrose - but she may be having an affair with Sir Helbur (494). With the death of Sir Arnulf, she is now the lord of Tilshead (495). She slept with Sir Helbur (497). Traveled to the Forest Sauvage to be delivered of her child, to attract a stork for her mother's allegorical zoo (498). Led refugees from Salisbury to Cameliard (499). Agreed to support Nanteleod as High King of Britain (500). Has split from Sir Helbur (503). Committed suicide (505).
Jonathel: The arrogant praetor of Dorset. Took credit for defeating King Idres of Cornwall (500). Intended to proclaim himself King, but was murdered by his enemies (509). 
Julian: The descendant of the last Roman defender of Hadrian's Wall. Believed to be a ghost by the Picts. Helped save the knights of Salisbury from the Picts, and married Bretta of Wallton (501).
Julius: The secular lord of Saint Albans - effectively just the leader of the town guard. He killed Sir Albrecht (492). Fought at the Battle of Saint Albans (495). Rescued Archbishop Bartholomew from the attack on Saint Albans (503). Killed Siegfried and was wounded; rescued from the wilderness by Sir Heward the Pale (504). Became a Knight of Saint Gwiona (507).

Kefin: Captain of the Lady Luck out of Exeter, a mostly honest merchant. Took the knights of Salisbury to Ireland to rescue Sir Cadfael (493).

Lac: Son of King Canan of Estregales, and brother of Prince Dirac. Fled Estregales when it was conquered by the Irish (495).
Lady of the Lake: The fey godmother of Merlin. There is a pagan sisterhood named after her. She helped Merlin claim Excalibur from Faerie (486). Sir Esther has also entered into a pact with her to protect Nimue (499).
Layamon: Knight of Dorset and military leader of Sir Corvus' attack against the Brigand King. Almost killed Sir Fflergant, but was slain by Sir Edwin (509).
Leodegrance: King of Cameliard. Has agreed to accept a tutor from Saint Gwiona for his daughter Guinevere (491). His wife suffered a miscarriage (492). Has agreed to a Gwionaite monastery and orphanage in Cameliard (494). Had an affair, leading to the birth of Guinevere and Guinevach (497). Has agreed to shelter the refugees from Salisbury (499).
Leona: A feral huntress at Wallton, in the shadow of Hadrian's Wall.
Lot: King of Lothian, the most powerful King north of the Wall. Tried and failed to get a seat on the Supreme Collegium (491). Married to Morgause, daughter of Gorlois (492).
Lugaid mac Leogairi: Ard Ri (High King) of Ireland. Has been granted a tribute of twenty slaves annually from Cornwall by King Uther Pendragon (492).

Madog: King of the Forest Sauvage. Granted a boon to the mortals who visited his realm, rewarding those who chose selflessly and punishing those who chose selfishly (499).
Maegan: Countess of Rydychan. Deposed by three brothers; her fate is unknown, but she is probably dead (495).
Mark: The Prince of Cornwall. Went as ambassador to Salisbury, and took part in the Salisbury Tournament (499). Fought at the Battle of Netley Marsh; he surrendered to Sir Edwin, but broke his parole and escaped when the battle was lost (508).
Martine: Veteran knight of Cornwall. She was Prince Mark's military adviser at the Battle of Netley Marsh, where she was killed by Sir Donna (508).
Meilyr: Lord of Tribuit, he does not accept visitors to his lands.
Merionwydd: A travelling bard who spreads the news of Britain as he goes.
Merlin: Goes by many names: Merlin Ambrosius, Myrrdin Emrys, Ambrose the scholar. The illegitimate son of High King Aurelius Ambrosius and Princess Aldan of Estregales. Reputedly has a twin sister, Ganeida, though he has denied this. Raised in a monastery, he was protected by the Lady of the Lake and taught by the hermit Galapas. He discovered that he possessed the gift of prophecy as a child when he met King Vortigern in his youth. Once he reached manhood, he met his father and created the monument of Stonehenge for him. He travelled to Faerie to claim Excalibur for King Uther with the help of the Lady of the Lake and Sir Cadfael, Sir Gherard, Sir Aeronwy, Sir Percival and Sir Arnulf. Merlin was crippled in the process (486). Most of Merlin's exploits are the result of a keen intelligence and great learning rather than any supernatural power. Recovered from his injuries and was given a walking stick by Sir Percival, then presented Excalibur to King Uther (487). Foretold the Battle of London, and recalled Prince Madoc from the continent to save the city from the Saxons (488). Forced a peace between King Uther and Duke Gorlois (489). Helped with first aid at the Battle of Lincoln (490). Used his magic to disguise Uther as Gorlois, so that Uther could rape Igraine and father a prophesied child upon her (491). Stole Uther and Igraine's child; has been convicted in absence of high treason and cursed by Igraine (492). Roused Uther to battle against the Saxons. Was poisoned at the feast following the Battle of Saint Albans, but survived at the cost of his mind - now living, insane, in the wilderness (495). His sanity has been restored to him, and he has gone to be young Arthur's tutor, in the guise of Ambrose the hermit (499). Visited Esther at Amesbury, and died (508).
Mother: An evil faerie; mother of the Nuckelavee that Sir Aeronwy slew and the Redcap changeling. She stole Cuthbert and his dog, the Questing Beast, leaving the Redcap behind as a changeling (495). Used Cuthbert to replace the Nuckelavee; he was rescued by Sir Brietta at the cost of her life (499).
Morgan: Daughter of Gorlois and Igraine. Betrothed to King Urien of Gorre (492). Living with her mother in Amesbury (495). Seems to be practicing magic, without the Ladies of the Lake noticing (498). Brutally slew a raiding party of Saxons with her magic when they attacked Igraine in Amesbury; married to King Urien post-haste (501).
Morgause: Daughter of Gorlois by his first wife. Married to King Lot of Lothian (492).

Nanteleod: King of Escavalon. Tried to have the lost seats of the Supreme Collegium transferred to Escavalon in exchange for his support of Uther, although he would have backed Uther as High King regardless (491). Manipulated the knights of Salisbury for inside information about the politics of Logres when they were passing through (494). Has conquered all of southern Wales (498). Sent his son Alain to take part in the Salisbury Tournament (499). Accepted the support of the Salisbury exiles, in exchange for his aid reclaiming their homeland (500). Conquered Northern Wales (501). Consolidated his power in preparation for war with Malahaut rather than fulfilling his promise to reclaim Salisbury (502). Defeated Malahaut; he now controls Wales and half of Logres (503). Annexed Rydychan, then gave control of it to Duke Ulfius to avoid conflict between them (504). Attacked Wessex; then defeated King Cwichelm at the Battle of Hertford (505). Went to war with King Idres over Somerset (506). Reclaimed Somerset (507). Died at the Battle of Netley Marsh (508).
Neot: Dwarf, ex-soldier, and sacristan at Glastonbury.
Nentres: King of Garloth, and owing allegiance to King Lot of Lothian. Married to Gorlois' daughter Elaine (492).
Nimue: A child entrusted to Sir Esther by Merlin (491). She lived in Amesbury Monastery, where she was friends with Morgan. Nineve: A Lady of the Lake, a claircognizant and healer. She recruited the knights of Salisbury to defeat Sir Gorboduc, and had a beautiful tomb built for Sir Cadfael and Lady Violette (497). Was escorted by the knights around the outskirts of the Forest Sauvage, and in exchange helped the knights obtain a stork. She later came to Salisbury to take Nimue away to join the Ladies of the Lake (498).

Odie: An old wisewoman living in Illwind. She masterminded the charade which kept the village safe. Like a mother to Lady Violette. Died of a heart attack confronting a faerie haunting Illwind (497).
Oengus: A young Pictish raider whose enthusiasm exceeds his skills. Captured by the knights of Salisbury for information, but released (501).
Oisc: Saxon King of Kent. Son of Hengist, brother of Octa. Responsible for arming the bandits in Logres and paying off Duke Gorlois. Attacked London but was driven off by Prince Madoc (488). Has allied with Octa (493). Invaded Salisbury, but withdrew after the death of Octa at Saint Albans (495). Sent his agents to acquire the Hamper of Gwyddno Garanhir (504).
Onion: A giant obsessed with all things Roman. Sir Cadfael, Sir Arnulf and Bronwyn convinced him to come live in Illwind Castle (489).
Orlin: A robber knight who took over Tilshead (503). Tried to be acknowledged as its lord, and killed Sir Bleddyn in a duel of honour - but was killed by Sir Cuthbert in revenge (506).

Pellinore: King of North Wales, he abandoned his homeland to hunt the Questing Beast.
Philamore: The blacksmith of Wallton, in the shadow of Hadrian's Wall. Wounded during a skirmish with Pictish raiders, he died of infection (501).
Port: Saxon King. Landed and conquered Portchester from King Cerdic (501). Entered into an alliance with King Cerdic (507).
Primrose: The fat old cook with Sir Fflergant, the Brigand King, and his rebels. Died when the bandits were destroyed (509).
Pwyll: Priest who helped Sir Edward with the persecution of the witch-cult in Devizes. Driven to alcohol by the experience (507).

Red Banneret of Glevum: Son of the Duke of Gloucester, and constantly feuding with his twin the Green Banneret of Glevum. More aggressive than his brother. Was an unwitting party in trying to get the knights of Salisbury involved in the feud between Gloucester and Clarence (494). Nearly killed by men of Clarence (503).
Redcap: A faerie changeling that took the place of Sir Aeronwy's son Cuthbert (495). Amoral and cruel, it was responsible for the death of Sir Brietta's brother (496). Placated by Sir Esther's adopted child (497). Incited the Saxon invasion of Salisbury (499). Killed by Sir Esther (500).
Remus: Senator of Dorset. Killed during the Saxon invasion (509).
Rhiann (1): Lady Mayor of London. Successful merchant with no scruples.
Rhiann (2): Wise-woman of Thornstead and tutor of Svenhilde in the occult; secretly the Mother of the witch-cult around Devizes (507). Destroyed by Merlin (509).
Rhisiart: The Steward of Leucomagus, vassal of Duke Ulfius of Silchester. Sir Rhisiart has an unrequited love for Countess Ellen of Salisbury. He was a suitor for her hand, but lost to Earl Roderick. This led to enmity between them. Sir Rhisiart frequently sends raiders into Salisbury. He pretended to negotiate peace in an attempt to murder the Earl; this was thwarted by Merlin (486). Has since renewed his raids. Personally insulted when Jenna was married to his former vassal, Sir Arnulf (492). Set up fake raids using Sir Arnulf's heraldry; the ruse was defeated by Sir Arnulf and Sir Cadfael (493). Sir Arnulf and Sir Helbur chastised him in front of his court, then abandoned seeking revenge in favour of concentrating on the Saxons (494). Persuaded Saxons to help him invade Salisbury, but was betrayed by them, and is now a captive in Sarum (497). Was ransomed back to Leucomagus (498). Died in a riding accident (499).
Robert: Newborn son of Earl Roderick and Countess Ellen of Salisbury, and heir to the county. Younger brother of Jenna. The Earl of Salisbury after the death of his father (495). Taken to Cameliard after the fall of Salisbury (499). Knighted and invested, he led the attack on Salisbury but was wounded (505). Fought at the Battle of Netley Marsh (508).
Rollo: Charlatan magician and follower of Sir Fflergant, the Brigand King. Gave Sir Helbur a tarot reading (509).
Romulus: Senator of Dorset. Leader of the faction against Praetor Jonathel. Arranged for Jonathel's murder and became the next Praetor, but was killed by the Saxons (509).

Saexwulf: A Saxon mercenary lord. Newly arrived from the continent, he swore fealty to King Aelle of Sussex and took part in the Salisbury Tournament (499). Led King Aelle's troops at the Battle of Netley Marsh (508).
Sigrun Eriksdottr: Saxon warrior-woman in the Sarum garrison; killed in a duel by Sir Jaradan (505).
Sligon: Usurper king of Thule.

Tad: A mischievous faerie who haunted Illwind and departed with Brietta to play tricks elsewhere; he soon tired of her (497).
Telifan: A Knight of Saint Gwiona. He manipulated his station to unjustly seize land in Wuerensis (509).
Thaddeus: A former knight of Malahaut who fled from a battle, and abandoned his oaths in shame. Reclaimed his honour when he helped rescue the knights of Salisbury, and swore to defend Hadrian's Wall from the Picts with Sir Julian (501).
Tom: Smith and follower of Sir Fflergant, the Brigand King. Killed by Briar (509).
Trentis: A knight formerly of Hampshire, who lost his land to the Saxons. Now follows Sir Fflergant, the Brigand King. Living with Lady Elaine (#4). Became the new leader of the bandits, but was killed along with his followers (509).

Ulfius: Duke of Silchester. The most powerful nobleman in Logres. Went with Uther when the King raped Igraine (491). Is advocating negotiating with Octa's Saxons (493). Was responsible for Eosa being released, as part of an attempted negotiation with Octa (494). Wounded in the Battle of Saint Albans (495). Is paying tribute to the Saxons (496). Has formed his own power base in the Thames Valley (502). Almost started fighting King Nanteleod; given control of Rydychan (504). Is effectively the leader of Logres after the death of King Nanteleod (508).
Urien: King of Gorre. He is allied with King Lot of Lothian. Engaged to Gorlois and Igraine's daughter Morgan (492). Married Morgan, though she was still a child (501).

Valiant: Son of King Aguar and Prince of Thule, living in exile in the Fens.
Verax: Senator of Dorset. Killed during the Saxon invasion (509).
Violette: Lady of Castle Illwind, an outlying settlement of Rydychan in the Campecorentin Forest. The menfolk, led by her father, marched off to war against the Saxons and perished at Menevia (480). With Illwind largely abandoned by Rydychan, she organised a ruse where the village pretended to be haunted to defend itself. Posed as a Black Knight to scare off all visitors. Her secret was discovered by Sir Arnulf and Sir Aeronwy (488). Married Sir Cadfael (489). Went with him to London, to the King’s Christmas feast (491). Left Castle Illwind to rescue Sir Cadfael when he was enslaved by the Irish (493). Died alongside her husband, saving Britain from Sir Gorboduc the Fiend (497).
Vithelen: The beautiful Maid of Stevington Wells.

Wulf: An immense Saxon warrior from Kent. Servant of Haydrich Cursebinder, and kept alive by black magics. Slain by the Hamper of Gwyddno Garanhir (504).
Wyan: Town leader of Thornstead and father of Elin, and witch cultist. Slain when possessed by the Crone of Thornstead (507).
