The Lords of Logres in the Age of Uther: Non-Player Characters

Acwel: Called ‘Raven’s-Cloak’. An older Saxon and leader of the Wotanic faith in Logres from Dorchester-On-Thames. Has agreed to work with Sir Albrecht and has taken the younger man on as his disciple. Acwel initiated Sir Albrecht into the secrets of runic magic. He was slain during the reprisal attacks that followed the death of the Archbishop of Canterbury (491).
Aelle: King of the South Saxons in Sussex. King Uther fought against him at Mearcred Creek (485) and won an inconclusive victory. Aelle took advantage of Logres' distraction to conquer Magouns, and slaughtered all the defenders (491). Octa has made overtures to him, but Aelle has not formed an alliance (493).
Aethelswith: King of the Angles in Anglia. Landed in Caercolun and defeated Duke Lucius, claiming the dukedom for himself after the Battle of Colchester (485). Slew Duke Lucius at the Battle of Ipswitch (486) and then consolidated his control over the area, renaming it 'Anglia'. He has not joined Octa's alliance (493).
Ailleane: Mistress of King Uther. Their affair ended when Uther became obsessed with Igraine; Ailleanne left to parts unknown (491).
Alain: A friendly knight of Escavalon.
Aldan: Princess of Estregales. Had an affair with Aurelius Ambrosius in her youth. Mother of Merlin. Retired to a monastery.
Amig: A knight of Salisbury, and Lord of Du Plain. Duped into accusing Sir Arnulf of banditry, he fought a duel of honour against him and was defeated (493).
Aurelius Ambrosius: High King of Britain. He defeated Vortigern and held off the Saxons for many years before being poisoned. Brother of Uther. Lover of Aldan. Father of Merlin.

Bartholomew: Archbishop of Canterbury. Follower of the Pelagian heresy. Reached a compromise with Gwiona and her followers, making them a part of the mainstream British Christian church (495).
Barr: Knight of Salisbury. Big, uncommunicative, strong. Died in the Battle of Saint Albans (495).
Berrant: Prince of Malahaut. Terrorises peasants with his group of faux-Roman crony-knights. Invaded northern Salisbury, in an alliance with the Saxons (494).
Bertram: Former second-in-command of Sir Arnulf in Leucomagus. Became Sir Rhisiart's champion when Sir Arnulf left Leucomagus (486). Raided Salisbury, disguised as Sir Arnulf (493). Apologised to his former friend (494). Died in the feast following the Battle of Saint Albans (495).
Brastias: Knight, bodyguard of King Uther Pendragon. Sir Brastias is reputed to be the most deadly swordsman in all Britain. He led an army against King Aethelswith of the Angles (486). Fought at Lincoln (490). Wounded at the Battle of Saint Albans (495).
Bronwyn: An intelligent young woman at Illwind, and friends with Sir Arnulf. Helped Sir Cadfael court Lady Violette (489). Accompanied Violette on her quest to save Sir Cadfael from the Irish (493).

Cador: Son of Duke Gorlois by his first wife. Led a token Cornish force at the Battle of Mearcred Creek, where he was insulted by Sir Cadfael (485). Fought at Lincoln (490). Reconciled with Sir Cadfael at King Uther’s Christmas feast. He survived the fall of Cornwall but became disillusioned with knighthood. Sir Cadfael helped him escape (491). Fought in the Battle of Saint Albans for Sir Cadfael's sake, where he slew the giant Eosa, then slipped away before the fatal feast (495).
Cadwy: King of Somerset. Untrustworthy but not powerful enough to cause any meaningful trouble. Sent raiders across the border into Salisbury when the army was on the continent with Praetor Syagrius (488). King Uther used this matter as leverage to win his vote on the Collegium (489).
Cahal: The Morholt (King's Champion) of Ireland. Sent by King Lugaid to collect slaves from Cornwall, he attacked Glastonbury and captured Evienne, a Lady of the Lake. He traded Evienne for Sir Cadfael after the knight defeated him in a duel (492). Let a raid against the Ui Maol, but was defeated (493).
Canan: King of Estregales. Was almost murdered by his advisor Sir Orcas, but was saved by Sir Esther and agreed to an alliance with Logres as a result (494). Died in the feast following the Battle of Saint Albans (495).
Centurion King: The King of Malahaut and member of the Supreme Collegium. Has agreed to vote for Uther Pendragon as High King (487). Has lost his confidence in King Uther after the Pendragon abandoned the meeting of the Supreme Collegium to chase Igraine, the wife of Duke Gorlois (491). Agreed to an alliance with King Octa against Logres (493). Invaded northern Logres as part of his alliance with the Saxons (494).
Clovis: King of the Franks. Defeated Praetor Syagrius in the Battle of Soissons (486). The most powerful barbarian leader on the continent.

Dewi: Called ‘The Waterman’ for his temperance, a Christian saint in Carlion. Helped convict Merlin of high treason (492). Refused to assist Gwionaism (494).
Diane: A female Irish knight. Became rivals / friends with Sir Aeronwy during King Uther’s Christmas feast. Fought in the tournament against Sir Albrecht and suffered major brain damage from a blow to the head (491).
Dirac: Prince of Estregales, son of King Canan and older brother of Prince Lac. He likes nuns rather too much. Was framed for attempting to murder his father by Sir Orcas, unsuccessfully (494).

Ector: A poor but honest knight of Cambria. He fought in the tournament at King Uther’s Christmas feast in London but was defeated by Sir Cadfael (491).
Edwina: Dowager Baroness of Devon. Looking for a toyboy after the death of her husband in the Battle of Lincoln, she married Sir Gherard after King Uther’s Christmas feast (491).
Eilmer: A monk of Malmsebury, interested in all sorts of sciences. He attempted to fly, but forgot to put a tail on his hinder parts and crashed into a tree (494). Visited Amesbury (495).
Elad: Marshal of Salisbury, lord of Vagon Castle. Trains young knights. Leader of half the forces of Salisbury at the Battle of Mearcred Creek – his unit held the line against the Saxons for long enough for King Uther to win the day (485). Was duped into accusing Sir Arnulf of banditry (493). Defeated the Saxon berserkers at the Battle of Saint Albans (495).
Elaine (1): Deranged former love of Sir Aeronwy; she left after Sir Aeronwy returned from Faerie a changed woman (486). Has since become a follower of Saint Gwiona (488). Instigated violence against Wotanists at Malksham (489). Was killed by Sir Albrecht in his retaliatory burning of Malksham (490).
Elaine (2):  Heiress of Salisbury. Rich and beautiful, but considered a hussy since it is common knowledge that she was having an affair. Her former husband and her lover killed one another.
Elaine (3): Daughter of Gorlois. After her father's death she was married to King Nentres of Garloth (492)
Eleri: Knight of London, Yeoman Commander of the Tower Guard. Betrayed Logres by allying with her prisoners Octa and Eosa. Helped Octa organise the bandit plot from in prison. During the Battle of London, she murdered many of the Tower Guard and freed her prisoners, and then fled the city (488). Nearly slew Sir Aeronwy at the Battle of Lincoln (490). Serving as Octa's bodyguard, she is encouraging further treachery within Logres (493). Octa's army has invaded northern Logres (494). Wounded by Sir Arnulf during the first day of fighting at Saint Albans. She poisoned the lords of Logres, but was herself slain by Sir Esther (495).
Ellen: Countess of Salisbury. Wife of Earl Roderick, mother of Jenna and Robert. Sir Rhisiart, the Steward of Leucomagus, was also a suitor for her hand; he has an unrequited love for her, which led to the enmity between Sarum and Leucomagus. Originally from Rydychan. With the death of her husband, she is in charge of Salisbury (495).
Eosa: Saxon king, cousin of Octa, nephew of Hengest. A half-giant. Was captured at the Battle of Mount Damen and held in the Tower of London (484). Escaped due to the perfidy of Sir Eleri during the Battle of London (488). Co-leader of a Saxon army ravaging Malahaut (489). Defeated by Duke Gorlois at the Battle of Lincoln, recaptured (490). Released to Octa in an attempt to negotiate with the Saxons; he is part of the army that has invaded northern Logres (494). Killed by Sir Cador at the Battle of Saint Albans (495).
Evienne: One of the Ladies of the Lake, a pagan sisterhood blessed with minor magical talents: she is a clairvoyant. Taken as a slave by the Irish, but rescued by Sir Cadfael (492). Helped rescue Sir Cadfael from Ireland (493).

Gabriel: Bandit in the Modron Forest. He fell in love with Sir Arnulf, but betrayed him and tried to murder him in the Compacorentin Forest when attacked by the bandit army. Slain by Sir Aeronwy. (488)
Ganeida: By repute, the twin sister of Merlin and leader of the Ladies of the Lake. Merlin has denied having a twin sister (491). Sir Arnulf has discovered her grave - she was stillborn (494).
Gorlois: Duke of Cornwall. Father of Sir Cador. Fought at Mount Damen (484). Did not answer the King's summons to war at Mearcred Creek (485). His absence may have cost Logres the victory. Married Igraine (485). It has been revealed that he was being paid off with Saxon gold (488). King Uther confronted him and regained his loyalty (489). Fought in the Battle of Lincoln, defeated Eosa (490). King Uther fell in love with his wife Igraine at the Christmas meeting of the Supreme Collegium; Gorlois left London without permission and Uther declared war on him. Slew Prince Madoc at the Battle of Castle Terrabil, and was himself slain by Sir Arnulf (491).
Green Banneret of Glevum: Son of the Duke of Gloucester, and constantly feuding with his twin the Green Banneret of Glevum. More cunning than his brother. Tried to get the knights of Salisbury involved in the feud between Gloucester and Clarence (494).
Gwenwynwyn: Admiral of Logres. Fought with Prince Madoc in the naval attack on the Saxon ships (487). Died at the banquet following the Battle of Saint Albans (495).
Gwiona: Heiress of Salisbury. She was engaged four times but each time her fiancee perished. Officially 'not cursed'. She was briefly the object of Sir Cadfael's attention, but after his dishonourable conduct at Mearcred Creek she withdrew to a monastery (486). After Sir Cadfael failed to implore her to leave, she has worked hard and is now regarded as a living saint at Amesbury, the monastery where she is Abbess (487). Discovered the fake priests who were taking Saxon gold to Duke Gorlois (488). The village of Malksham, which pays rent to her, was the site of violence between Wotanists and Christians (489). Following its destruction at the hands of Sir Albrecht, she has petitioned Earl Roderick for justice (490). Had Sir Albrecht swear to rebuild Malksham, and to defend women and the church, before sending Sir Esther to be her agent in politics (491). Personally intervened to stop the reprisal attacks against Sir Albrecht's family after the death of the Archbishop Iestyn (492). Duped into accusing Sir Arnulf of banditry (493). Secondary Gwionaite abbeys/orphanages have been established in Cameliard and Estregales (494). Reached a compromise with Archbishop Bartholomew and has been accepted into the mainstream church (495).
Gwynfor: King of Ystrad Twi, a small Welsh hill-tribe. Acquired a warhorse of Logres in exchange for a Gwionaite nun that he had kidnapped (494).

Helbur: Knight of Salisbury, and former squire of Sir Arnulf. Made warden of Tilshead in Sir Arnulf's absences (493). He may be having an affair with Lady Jenna (494). Killed King Octa at the Battle of Saint Albans (495).
Hengist: First leader of the Saxon invaders. Invited to Logres by Vortigern, but usurped power. King of Kent, the first Saxon kingdom. Murdered many of the leaders of Logres at the Night of Long Knives. Slain in revenge by Duke Eldol. His sons are Octa and Oisc.
Hubert: A short, round, pink-faced knight. Hates Wotanism. Repeatedly challenged Sir Albrecht during King Uther’s Christmas feast; was defeated by him (491).
Hywel: Archbishop of Canterbury and leader of the Christian faith in Britain. Ruled from London since the fall of Canterbury to the Saxons. He tried to negotiate with the peasant army attacking London and was murdered by the Prophet (488).

Iestyn: Archbishop of Canterbury after the death of Hywel (489). A consummate politician. Moved the see of the Archbishopric to Saint Albans, and has attempted to blackmail Sir Albrecht into leading the Wotanic faith against Saint Gwiona. Sir Albrecht took insult to this and murdered him in his sleep (491).
Ifan: Knight of London, commander of the City Guard. Appointed to his position by King Vortigern’s pro-Saxon regime and has served faithfully ever since. Successfully commanded the defence of London against the bandit army (488). Died in the feast following the Battle of Saint Albans (495).
Igraine: Duchess of Cornwall. Married to Duke Gorlois (485). King Uther fell in love with her at London. Raped by Uther in the form of Duke Gorlois. Married Uther to become Queen of Logres a month later. Pregnant (491). After the abduction of her baby by Merlin, she has used witchcraft to curse him (492). Retired to Amesbury with her daughter Morgan following the death of King Uther Pendragon (495).
Indeg: Heiress of Salisbury. An older woman who has outlived two husbands. Currently enjoying her twilight years married to Sir Jaradan.

Jaradan: Knight of Salisbury. An ambitious man obsessed with swords. He married Lady Indeg (485) for her considerable estates. Killed a berserker in single combat at Lincoln (490). Fought at the Battle of Saint Albans (495).
Jenna: Daughter of Earl Roderick and Countess Ellen of Salisbury. Elder sister of Robert. Was nearly betrothed to Sir Rhisiart (486). Earl Roderick married her to Sir Arnulf, mostly to spite Sir Rhisiart (492). Gave birth to twin boys, Madoc and Ambrose - but she may be having an affair with Sir Helbur (494). With the death of Sir Arnulf, she is now the lord of Tilshead (495).
Julius: The secular lord of Saint Albans - effectively just the leader of the town guard. He killed Sir Albrecht (492). Fought at the Battle of Saint Albans (495).

Katrin: Knight of London. Led a bandit-hunting force which used overly-harsh tactics. She was called out for her brutality by Sir Cadfael and slain. (488)
Kefin: Captain of the Lady Luck out of Exeter, a mostly honest merchant. Took the knights of Salisbury to Ireland to rescue Sir Cadfael (493).

Lac: Son of King Canan of Estregales, and brother of Prince Dirac.
Lady of the Lake: The fey godmother of Merlin. There is a pagan sisterhood named after her. She helped Merlin claim Excalibur from Faerie (486).
Leo: Knight of Salisbury. A big, bearded, tattooed pagan. Very honourable. Afraid of Sir Aeronwy. Lost two fingers in the Battle of Mearcred Creek (485). Duped into accusing Sir Arnulf of banditry (493). Died in the feast following the Battle of Saint Albans (495).
Leodegrance: King of Cameliard. Has agreed to accept a tutor from Saint Gwiona for his daughter Guinevere (491). His wife suffered a miscarriage (492). Has agreed to a Gwionaite monastery and oprhanage in Cameliard (494).
Lot: King of Lothian, the most powerful King north of the Wall. Tried and failed to get a seat on the Supreme Collegium (491). Married to Morgause, daughter of Gorlois (492).
Lucius: Duke of Caercolun. He was defeated in the Battle of Colchester (485) by the invading King Aethelswith and his Angles. He attempted a counterattack but was slain in the battle of Ipswitch (486).
Lugaid mac Leogairi: Ard Ri (High King) of Ireland. Has been granted a tribute of twenty slaves annually from Cornwall by King Uther Pendragon (492).
Lycus: Knight of Salisbury. Dishonourable and self-serving. Led a patrol that fought raiders from Leucomagus (485). Duped into accusing Sir Arnulf of banditry (493). Died in the Battle of Saint Albans (495).

Madoc: Illegitimate Prince of Britain and heir to the throne. Led a small elite army against King Aethelswith to contain the Angle invasion (485). Led a naval attack against the Saxon ships (487). Led an army to the continent to help Praetor Syagrius, but returned on the advice of Merlin, just in time to drive the Saxons from London (488). Nearly murdered by Syagrius before the Battle of Lincoln – rescued by Sir Arnulf, who has become his lover (490). Killed by Duke Gorlois at the Battle of Castle Terrabil (491).
Merionwydd: A travelling bard who spreads the news of Britain as he goes.
Merlin: Goes by many names: Merlin Ambrosius, Myrrdin Emrys, Ambrose the scholar. The illegitimate son of High King Aurelius Ambrosius and Princess Aldan of Estregales. Reputedly has a twin sister, Ganeida, though he has denied this. Raised in a monastery, he was protected by the Lady of the Lake and taught by the hermit Galapas. He discovered that he possessed the gift of prophecy as a child when he met King Vortigern in his youth. Once he reached manhood, he met his father and created the monument of Stonehenge for him. He travelled to Faerie to claim Excalibur for King Uther with the help of the Lady of the Lake and Sir Cadfael, Sir Gherard,  Sir Aeronwy, Sir Percival and Sir Arnulf. Merlin was crippled in the process (486). Most of Merlin's exploits are the result of a keen intelligence and great learning rather than any supernatural power. Recovered from his injuries and was given a walking stick by Sir Percival, then presented Excalibur to King Uther (487). Foretold the Battle of London, and recalled Prince Madoc from the continent to save the city from the Saxons (488). Forced a peace between King Uther and Duke Gorlois (489). Helped with first aid at the Battle of Lincoln (490). Used his magic to disguise Uther as Gorlois, so that Uther could rape Igraine and father a prophecied child upon her (491). Stole Uther and Igraine's child; has been convicted in absence of high treason and cursed by Igraine (492). Roused Uther to battle against the Saxons. Was poisoned at the feast following the Battle of Saint Albans, but survived at the cost of his mind - now living, insane, in the wilderness (495).
Morgan: Daughter of Gorlois and Igraine. Betrothed to King Urien of Gorre (492). Living with her mother in Amesbury (495).
Morgause: Daughter of Gorlois by his first wife. Married to King Lot of Lothian (492).

Nanteleod: King of Escavalon. Tried to have the lost seats of the Supreme Collegium transferred to Escavalon in exchange for his support of Uther, although he would have backed Uther as High King regardless (491). Manipulated the knights of Salisbury for inside information about the politics of Logres when they were passing through (494).
Neot: Dwarf, ex-soldier, and sacristan at Glastonbury.
Nentres: King of Garloth, and owing allegiance to King Lot of Lothian. Married to Gorlois' daughter Elaine (492).
Nicolette: Grandmother of  Sir Gherard, an extremely lustful matriarch.

Octa: Saxon King, son of Hengist, brother of Oisc and cousin of Eosa. Mastermind behind the plot to arm bandits to weaken Logres from within. Captured at the battle of Mount Damen and imprisoned in the Tower of London (484). Responsible for Sir Eleri defecting to the Saxon cause. He continued to mastermind the infiltration of Logres from within the Tower with her aid. Escaped during the Battle of London (488). Leading an army in Malahaut (489). Defeated at the Battle of Lincoln but escaped the battle, leaving another man to be captured in his place (490). Founded the kingdom of Deira, and has made an alliance with many of the other Saxon kingdoms, as well as Malahaut, against Logres (493). He has invaded northern Logres (494). Killed by Sir Arnulf and Sir Helbur at the Battle of Saint Albans (495).
Odie: An old wisewoman living in Illwind. She masterminded the charade which kept the village safe. Like a mother to Lady Violette.
Oisc: Saxon King of Kent. Son of Hengist, brother of Octa. Responsible for arming the bandits in Logres and paying off Duke Gorlois. Attacked London but was driven off by Prince Madoc (488). Has allied with Octa (493). Invaded Salisbury, but withdrew after the death of Octa at Saint Albans (495).
Onion: A giant obsessed with all things Roman. Sir Cadfael, Sir Arnulf and Bronwyn convinced him to come live in Illwind Castle (489).
Orcas: Steward of Estregales. Tried to overthrow the king in an attempt to ensure Estregales would fight against the Saxons, but was slain as a traitor (494).

Prophet: An anonymous bandit driven insane by his hatred for knights, in particular Sir Aeronwy. (484). Claimed to be a prophet of God, and led an army of bandits and peasants in the Campecorentin Forest. Attacked London and personally killed Archbishop Hywel of Canterbury. Challenged Sir Albrecht to stand in an inferno to prove his religious power, but was defeated and burned to death. (488)

Red Banneret of Glevum: Son of the Duke of Gloucester, and constantly feuding with his twin the Green Banneret of Glevum. More aggressive than his brother. Was an unwitting party in trying to get the knights of Salisbury involved in the feud between Gloucester and Clarence (494).
Rhiann: Lady Mayor of London. Successful merchant with no scruples.
Rhisiart: The Steward of Leucomagus, vassal of Duke Ulfius of Silchester. Sir Rhisiart has an unrequited love for Countess Ellen of Salisbury. He was a suitor for her hand, but lost to Earl Roderick. This led to enmity between them. Sir Rhisiart frequently sends raiders into Salisbury. He pretended to negotiate peace in an attempt to murder the Earl; this was thwarted by Merlin (486). Has since renewed his raids. Personally insulted when Jenna was married to his former vassal, Sir Arnulf (492). Set up fake raids using Sir Arnulf's heraldry; the ruse was defeated by Sir Arnulf and Sir Cadfael (493). Sir Arnulf and Sir Helbur chastised him in front of his court, then abandoned seeking revenge in favour of concentrating on the Saxons (494).
Robert: Newborn son of Earl Roderick and Countess Ellen of Salisbury, and heir to the county. Younger brother of Jenna. The Earl of Salisbury after the death of his father (495).
Roderick: Earl of Salisbury. Married to Ellen, father to Jenna and Robert. Enemy of Sir Rhisiart, the Steward of Leucomagus. Went on a diplomatic mission to Malahaut (493). Died at the feast following the Battle of Saint Albans (495).
Rowena: Dowager Baroness of Devon. Married Sir Gherard (491).

Syagrius: Roman Praetor of Soissons, the last remnant of the Roman Empire in the west. Defeated by King Clovis at the Battle of Soissons (486), he has fled to Britain with his followers to petition King Uther for aid. Prince Madoc led an army over to help him reclaim Soissons, but abandoned him there (488). Returned to Britain to seek vengeance on Prince Madoc, but was slain by Sir Arnulf (490).

Talferyn: Marshall of Logres. Led an attack on Kent – recaptured Canterbury, but was repulsed in a later counterattack (487). Died at the feast following the Battle of Saint Albans (495).

Uhtred: Saxon warrior and leader of a small bandit group in Salisbury. Slain by Sir Cadfael (484).
Ulfius: Duke of Silchester. The most powerful nobleman in Logres. Went with Uther when the King raped Igraine (491). Is advocating negotiating with Octa's Saxons (493). Was responsible for Eosa being released, as part of an attempted negotiation with Octa (494). Wounded in the Battle of Saint Albans (495).
Urien: King of Gorre. He is allied with King Lot of Lothian. Engaged to Gorlois and Igraine's daughter Morgan (492).
Uther Pendragon: King of Logres. Younger brother of High King Aurelius Ambrosius, father of Prince Madoc, uncle of Merlin. Fought against Aelle at Mearcred Creek, an inconclusive victory (485). Wields Excalibur (486). Uther seeks to save Britain from the Saxons, and aims to become High King so he can unite Britain. Diplomatic mission to Lincoln and Malahaut to secure their votes (487). Diplomatic mission to Wales (488). Led an army against Duke Gorlois, but was reconciled with him due to Merlin (489). Using Excalibur, defeated Octa and Eosa at the Battle of Lincoln (490). Fell in love with Igraine, the wife of Duke Gorlois, at the Christmas gathering of the Supreme Collegium – failed to become High King. Declared war on Gorlois in order to claim Igraine. With the help of Merlin, he raped her and fathered a child upon her (491). Agreed that the Irish could claim twenty slaves a year from Cornwall in reparation for Merlin taking the Giant's Dance from Mount Killare. His child by Igraine was taken by Merlin; Uther has declared him guilty of High Treason (492). Has fallen ill (493). Is dying (494). Roused by Merlin to fight against the Saxons one more time. He defeated Octa at Saint Albans, but died in the feast following the battle (495).

Violette: Lady of Castle Illwind, an outlying settlement of Rydychan in the Campecorentin Forest. The menfolk, led by her father, marched off to war against the Saxons and perished at Menevia (480). With Illwind largely abandoned by Rydychan, she organised a ruse where the village pretended to be haunted to defend itself. Posed as a Black Knight to scare off all visitors. Her secret was discovered by Sir Arnulf and Sir Aeronwy (488). Married Sir Cadfael (489). Went with him to London, to the King’s Christmas feast (491). Left Castle Illwind to rescue Sir Cadfael when he was enslaved by the Irish (493).
Vortigern: High King of Britain. Invited the Saxons, led by Hengist, into Logres. Slain by Aurelius Ambrosius.
